More about Ross

An invaluable addition to the Diagnostech family, we will forgive Ross for the fact that he lives in Cape Town…

Ross began his studies at the University of Stellenbosch where he obtained a BSc in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology. He went on to obtain a BSc Honours in Human Genetics at the University’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences Tygerberg campus. His Honours project investigated underlying associations between genetic variation of the serotonin transporter gene and psychiatric disorders such as PTSD and OCD. After completion of his Honours degree, he was eager to explore new scientific fields and completed his MSc in Molecular Biology at the University of Stellenbosch’s Animal TB research group supervised by Prof. Michelle Miller. His Master’s thesis was focused on characterising the humoral immune response to bovine tuberculosis infection in wildlife hosts such as African buffalo and rhino using immunoassays, in addition to novel DNA sequencing of immune response genes in buffalo.

Ross started his NGS career at the Centre for Proteomic and Genomic Research (CPGR) after completing his MSc. He worked there for 4 years, managing the NGS Diagnostic Unit where he gained valuable experience in routine human diagnostics, performing tests such as NIPT, HLA-typing and Whole-exome sequencing. Ross joined Diagnostech in 2020 as a Field Application Scientist, supporting the Genomics portfolio. He has a keen interest in personalised medicine, particularly the use of NGS in the clinical setting which he envisions becoming the standard for patients in the future as technological advances allow increased accessibility to these cutting-edge tools.

Outside of work he enjoys braais with friends, mountain hikes, computers, and staying up-to-date with the latest in technology.
